Meacham Creek Restoration Project
The Medinah Park District continues its work during 2009 to restore part of Meacham Creek Park, located on Thorndale Avenue, east of Medinah Road, to the wetland ecosystem that was present there before the area was developed. Approximately 5 acres of the 12 acre park will be restored to the way the land used to be. Following the removal of a great amount of existing vegetation, which consisted of non-native plants which came to dominate the area, the restoration area was re-graded slightly to create a more definite water storage area, plus the properly sloped buffer areas. Last fall, cover crops were seeded in much of the buffer area and a number of new trees were planted.

The winter, spring and summer seasons featured additional clearing on non-native species, a prescribed burn in the forested area and part of the buffer area, followed by more planting. In June of 2008, during the "wet" season, large crews planted thousands of wetland plant species in designated areas. More trees, shrubs and prairie plants were also put into place and flowering species ringed the area. The area was protected at this time from "invasion" by geese, using a network of string placed horizontally across the area. Ducks and other birds would still have access.

Sometime late this fall or early winter, another prescribed burn will take place. The weather conditions need to be just right for this, so a time can not be pinpointed. During 2009, non-native plants will continue to be removed and native species will be further cultivated.

As we look forward to the completion of the restoration(which will take several years) we appreciate the understanding and cooperation we have received from our residents. As those who have kept up with the project know, the entire project is being paid for by a developer (no park district funds are being spent) and they will also pay to monitor the area for 5 years after it is completed. Feel free to contact the Park District staff at 630-893-2560 with any questions you have regarding the project.
